A randomized controlled trial from Istanbul found that combining Jacobson Progressive Muscle Relaxation (JPMR) with targeted cold therapy using a gel ice cap can ease migraine burden in adults with migraine without aura . Participants in the combined group practiced 30 minutes of JPMR followed by a 15‑minute cold application (forehead, both temples, and back of the head/upper neck) three times per week for six weeks, using a gel pack cooled to about +4 °C .
Both the JPMR-only and the JPMR-plus-cold groups showed significant improvements in pain intensity, migraine-related disability (MIDAS), and quality of life over 4–6 weeks . However, those receiving the added cold gel cap experienced a greater reduction in the number of migraine attacks per month, suggesting that this simple, low-cost, non-drug strategy may be a useful adjunct to standard migraine care .
